Perowsky’s notable career has placed him among a small vanguard of players able to move between jazz, experimental music and cutting edge pop and rock. CONNECTIONS:
In the NYC of the 1980s, Ben experienced an incredible samba band called Pe De Boi. Led by the late great Guilherme Francohey - they wore bright blue coveralls and brought an amazing party. Cyro Baptista and Billy Martin were integral members. At that time, Ben and Billy shared double bills with Medeski Martin and Wood. Cyro and Ben performed and recorded with John Zorn, Joseph Arthur and most recently Jamie Saft’s New Zion Trio.

Cyro Baptista
Brazilian percussionist and composer Cyro Baptista is widely considered one of the premiere percussionists on the planet, with a resume too long to list. His mastery of Brazilian percussion and the many instruments he creates himself, have catapulted him into world renowned recognition. His envelope-pushing, outside-the-box approach draws freely on sounds from around the globe to create utterly unique, unapologetic music that remains fun, forward-thinking and totally accessible.
Cyro's credits read like a "Who’s Who" of modern music. He toured extensively with Yo-Yo Ma's Brazil Project, Trey Anastasio's Band (of Phish), John Zorn's Electric Masada, Herbie Hancock's Grammy award winning "Gershwin’s World" , Sting and Paul Simon's "Rhythm of the Saints", among a range of notable artists from nearly every musical genre.
Billy Martin
From the roots of the downtown scene he emerged with Medeski Martin and Wood, bridging the harmonic complexity of jazz, the conversational fluency of free improvisation, and the groove and swagger of classic R&B and funk. A series of albums and high-profile collaborations with John Scofield, John Zorn, iggy Pop, Natalie Merchant, and others, brought the band international acclaim.
Martin has relentlessly pursued diverse musical contexts, from free improvisation to chamber compositions to film scores. Much of his work is available via his Amulet Records label, which recently released the Road to Jajouka—a series of collaborations (produced by Martin) between the Master Musicians of Jajouka and such artists as Ornette Coleman, Flea, Marc Ribot, John Zorn, Lee Ranaldo, Bill Laswell, Mickey Hart, MMW and more.
An accomplished filmmaker and visual artist, Martin's work has been exhibited in both solo and group installations worldwide. What began for Martin as tireless enthusiasm for music, percussion, and improvisation evolved into a wide ranging search for the roots of inspiration. Among the most valuable undertakings in this ongoing exploration is teaching.
