“Cameron Brown and Dannie’s Calypso” was born out of seminal experiences with Don Cherry in the 1960’s and ten years of exhilarating intensity with Don Pullen, George Adams and Dannie Richmond in the 1980’s.
In addition to original compositions, the band delights in grappling with Don Cherry’s concept of the “cocktail suite.” These suites involve the harmelodic melding of a number of compositions into a cohesive, continuous set of music. Don originated the concept in the mid-sixties and it can be heard on the “Complete Communion” and “Symphony for Improvisers” recordings on Blue Note as well as on the recently released radio tapes from Copenhagen, 1966 on ESP. In Copenhagen in ’66, any and every song could and did find its way into the musical collage -- from bebop classics to Jobim to Albert Ayler to Ornette and Don originals and beyond. ...
